Urban legend has forty different names for rain in Glasgow. It's supposed to reflect the centrality and nuance of weather's influence on daily life.

Tom Scanlon's paintings mirror that rich vocabulary. His words? - the kaleidoscope of hues, the tracer burst of primary colours weaving the warp of the crowd and traffic in his cityscsape scenes. They are, like rain, transient, snapshots, and that is how he collects much of his material but paint cannot solidify ephemeral scenes any more than it can explain them.

Tom says: "The paintings/images that attract me are the ones which are not immediately accessible to the eye. Ones in which a little mystery lies behind in terms of technique or form. In order to achieve such an effect
I prefer to use only a palette knife. I try to capture the complexity and beauty of the built environment in this manner. The result is a highly textured painting consisting of both magnitude and direction, almost 3D."

Tom Scanlon was born in 1963. He now lives and works in Paisley. He paints city and landscapes in heavy impasto oils using only a palette knife. This creates a richly textured image in vivid colour.

He has work in private collections in the USA, France, Holland and Ireland. He has also, recently completed a commission for St. George's Tron Church, Mandela Place in Glasgow's city centre..
