Madeleine Gardiner

Madeleine Gardiner grew up in Edinburgh, after finishing school she attended Leeds College of Art for the Foundation Diploma followed by Edinburgh College of Art for her undergraduate degree in Painting.  Madeleine’s work is comprised of a blend of memories, no painting is of one particular place, and each painting is a composite of her experiences.

"Wild spaces, memory and atmosphere are key areas of concern in my work. I often create composite landscapes, built from memories that I feel are connected through a shared aesthetic. The simultaneous push and pull between paint appearing as paint and what it is representing allows me to be selective with the information and details I include in each piece of work. The way in which elements within a landscape are altered by light is my primary focus; every decision I make is centred on reacting to this. I have a fascination with depth, which had led to an on-going attempt to achieve a sense of immersion through paint."

PROJECTS:

A recent sale of a large diptych to The Gleneagles Hotel in conjunction with David Collins Studio, London.

The Scottish Investment Trust purchased a painting for the cover of their Annual Report 2016 and another for their interim Report.

Madeleine was invited to exhibit at The Edinburgh Macmillan Art Show in August 2017, and they used one of her paintings in their promotional material including the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Programme. Madeleine supported The Prince’s Trust with proceeds from this show as a thank you for a grant they gave her for her first London exhibition. She is currently in discussions with The Prince’s Trust regarding a role as an Ambassador for the Charity.

Macmillan has chosen Madeleine in an effort to pre-empt The Scottish Government’s ‘Year of Young People’ initiative in 2018.

She currently exhibits in galleries across Scotland and in London.

She was a Finalist in The Saatchi Gallery/Sunday Telegraph Art Prize for Schools 2011.
